Sustainability without sacrificing style

Gavin David is a designer curious about the potential in the hidden depths of bag design. The youngest of seven, he grew up in Ireland making the most of hand-me-downs which gave him an appreciation for design and style from different eras. ‘Make do’ may be seen as compromise by most, but prudently using available resources to make and do has long been the proud M.O. of his design practice.
Studying Fashion Design in Manchester, UK, he focused on sustainability and use of resources. Moving on to establish over a decade long career in menswear buying and merchandising in London, he gained much valuable experience but also saw first-hand how wasteful and damaging the industry can be and often is.
Looking for a creative outlet as a hobby to run alongside his career, inspiration hit in the unlikely form of a pile of old sofa leather outside the local craft shop. Soon enough that hobby became a full time pursuit and now Gavin David creates one-off and small run pieces in leathers and materials that would otherwise be thrown away. Some have already had a life as furniture, others are excess from the first round of production that would otherwise get thrown away in the manufacturing process.
Now based in Montréal, his designs are informed by eclectic sources but always come together with a refined, easy elegance in mind. Using sustainability as his design ethos guarantees unique and rare product to suit a more considered, stylish individual. The cut and form of pieces are based on time-honoured shapes with a compelling use of colour using sumptuous leathers and lush linings. A meticulous attention to detail and chic finishes all come together to elevate throw-away leather and materials into tasteful and handsome bags and accessories.
Guided by these design principles, Gavin David continues to seek out new sustainable methods to create lasting product that you will want to carry with you.

The Four Swans
Inspired by the old Irish tale The Children of Lir, the four swans are four children who were cursed by their evil stepmother and transformed to live as swans for 900 years. There are many themes in this story from Irish mythology, but the idea of metamorphosis and something beautiful having a hidden story and depth is something that resonated strongly. A past unknown, under a beautiful appearance.
That is the objective of Gavin David, to create beautiful objects with a hidden past.
